It seems some Ycashers are fond of the number 8. So why is 8 such a special number?

In Mandarin, 8 “ba” sounds like the word for wealth and fortune. And 88 “Xǐ” sounds like the word for double happiness.

Flight numbers into or out of China often include an 8 for good luck. For example, Shanghai to Toronto is flight AC88, Beijing to San Francisco is UA888.

The 2008 summer olympics in Beijing started at 8:08:08 pm on 08/08/08.

Apartments on the 8th or 88th floor of buildings in China cost more.

A chessboard has 8 rows and 8 columns.

Every atom of oxygen has 8 protons.

A computer byte is 8 bits.

All spiders have 8 legs. Octopus have 8 arms. Ascus fungi have 8 spores.

In the Bible, there were 8 people on Noah’s ark. Abraham had 8 sons. The New Testament was written by 8 people (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, James, Peter, Jude, and Paul). There are 8 beatitudes, 8 blessings from Jesus from the sermon on the mount. After Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, he showed himself alive 8 times.

The wheel of dharma has 8 spokes representing the Noble Eightfold Path, 8 Buddhist practices leading to liberation.

Hanukkah is 8 days.

In movies, there’s 8 Mile, Super 8, 8mm, 8 Men Out, and The Hateful Eight. Fight Club has 8 rules.

The College World Series in Omaha Nebraska invites 8 teams each year. Skaters do figure-8 turns.

An eighth or 8-ball is a common measurement for illegal drugs.

A cup has 8 ounces. A gallon has 8 pints. A mile is 8 furlongs. 8 is the only Fibonacci number that is a perfect cube, and a cube has 8 vertices.
